Quick answer: MDF is stronger, smoother and handles moisture better than particle board, so it is the better choice for wardrobes, TV stands, kitchen cabinets and anything you want to last. Particle board (chipboard) is cheaper and lighter, so it suits light-use or short-term furniture. For beds, sofa frames and dining tables that carry real weight every day, solid hardwood such as mvule, mahogany or cypress beats both.
MDF vs particle board vs solid wood at a glance
| Feature | MDF | Particle board (chipboard) | Solid hardwood (mvule, mahogany, cypress) |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Fine wood fibres pressed with resin | Wood chips and sawdust glued together | Sawn timber |
| Strength | Good | Low – can sag under weight | Very high |
| Surface | Very smooth – ideal for paint and laminate | Rough – needs laminate or veneer | Natural grain |
| Moisture | Swells if wet unless sealed; moisture-resistant MDF is available | Swells and crumbles when wet | Best, when properly treated and finished |
| Screws and repairs | Holds screws reasonably well | Screw holes strip easily | Holds screws well; can be sanded and repaired |
| Lifespan | Medium to long | Short | Longest – often decades |
| Cost | Mid | Lowest | Highest |
| Best for | Wardrobes, TV stands, shelves, cabinets | Light shelves, budget or temporary furniture | Beds, sofa frames, dining tables, chairs |
What is MDF?
MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) is an engineered board made by breaking wood down into fine fibres, mixing them with resin and pressing them under heat. The result is a dense, even board with no knots or grain, which is why it takes paint and laminate so well. In Kenya you will usually see it sold in 8ft x 4ft sheets, either plain or laminated in finishes such as African wenge.
Related boards you may hear about:
- HDF (High Density Fibreboard): denser and harder than MDF, often used for flooring and door skins.
- Moisture-resistant (MR) MDF: usually tinted green; a better choice for kitchens and bathrooms.
What is particle board (chipboard)?
Particle board is made from larger wood chips, shavings and sawdust bonded with glue. It is lighter and cheaper than MDF, but less dense. That makes it weaker under load and much more likely to swell and break down if it gets wet. It is common in flat-pack furniture.
Is MDF stronger than particle board?
Yes. Because MDF is denser, shelves made from it sag less and hold screws better. Particle board shelves can bow over time when loaded with books or clothes, and screw holes tend to loosen after the piece is moved or reassembled.
Which handles Kenya’s rainy season better?
Neither board likes water. Unsealed edges on both will absorb moisture and swell. MDF copes better, especially moisture-resistant MDF with sealed edges and a good laminate or paint finish. Particle board is the first to fail in damp rooms, near kitchen sinks or on floors that get mopped. If moisture is a concern, choose sealed MDF or treated solid wood.
Where does solid wood fit in?
For furniture that carries weight every day – beds, double-decker beds, sofa frames, dining tables and chairs – solid hardwood is the most durable option. It can be sanded, repaired and refinished, so a well-made mahogany or mvule bed can last for decades. It costs more up front, but you replace it far less often.
Which should you choose?
- On a tight budget, or furniture for a short stay: particle board with a good laminate.
- Wardrobes, TV stands, shelves and cabinets: MDF, ideally moisture-resistant for kitchens and bathrooms.
- Beds, sofa frames and dining tables: solid hardwood.
- Best of both: a solid-wood frame with MDF panels gives strength where it matters and a smooth finish where it shows.

Frequently asked questions
Is MDF a type of particle board?
No. Both are engineered wood, but MDF is made from fine fibres and is denser and smoother, while particle board is made from larger chips and is lighter and weaker.
Which lasts longer, MDF or particle board?
MDF usually lasts longer, especially in furniture that is moved or loaded. Particle board is more likely to sag, lose screw grip or swell if it gets wet.
Is MDF waterproof?
No. Standard MDF will swell if it soaks up water. Moisture-resistant MDF with sealed edges and a good finish performs much better, but it is still not waterproof.
Is MDF better than solid wood?
MDF is smoother and more stable for painted doors and panels, but solid hardwood is stronger, easier to repair and lasts longer. For beds, sofa frames and tables, choose solid wood.
